My Canadian Experience With Colourpop Cosmetics

If you're at all into makeup it's almost a guarantee that you've heard of Colourpop Cosmetics. The brand is all over, and I mean ALL OVER, blogs and YouTube because the products are fun, great quality, and super cheap (or so I hear). The blogger and beauty lover in me had to see what all the fuss was about, but being in Canada and not the USA, I was really hesitant to place an order for a lot of reasons. The first being that shipping is not free, and the cost is assessed depending on how much you order, meaning the more you buy the more your shipping cost will be. Second, the website says orders can take 10-21 business days to arrive if you live outside of the USA, which is absolute agony for an impatient girl like me. The third (and biggest) reason I was hesitant to order was because I've heard that Canadians have been nailed in duty fees, so I was worried I was going to be charged an additional $60 or more on top of the pricey shipping fees and conversion rates. ANYWAY, as you can obviously see from my photo I let my curiosity get the better of me and I placed an order! EEE! I'll save the product reviews for another post, but instead I wanted to let all of you know my experience with the shipping process and let you know if I would order from the brand again.

First let's talk numbers. Colourpop eyeshadows and lippie stix/pencils retail for $5 USD, which right now with the conversion rate totals $6.33. Not sure if it was a little bit more or less than this when I made my purchase because these rates are always changing, but you get the idea. With everything that I bought (4 eyeshadows, 6 lippie stix, 2 lippie pencils and 1 blush), my subtotal was $63 USD (79.97 CAD) with a $5 discount code. Shipping cost $14.92 USD ($18.88 CAD) which sucked. Seriously, you Americans have no idea how lucky you are. Anyway, my total was $77.92 USD (98.62 CAD) meaning I roughly paid $7.58 CAD per item. When you break it down like that what I paid really isn't bad at all, so I was happy!

I placed my order on June 24 at around 10pm, and received an email almost instantly from Colourpop with a breakdown of my order, how much I spent, and a warning that orders usually take 3-5 business days to process. I received my order on July 2, which is only 6 business days after I placed my order, and 5 considering the fact that July 1 was a holiday and nothing gets delivered on holidays. So basically, instead of 10-21 business days my order took only 5 which I was blown away by. So so so happy!

The best news of all is that I was charged $0 in duties. NOTHING. Literally over the moon happy and excited because shipping rarely goes that smoothly in Canada unless something is getting shipped within Canada. I'm pretty sure the reason I didn't get charged is because my order was under $100 CAD, so if you're Canadian I would keep your order under $100 and you should be totally fine in terms of customs/duties.

Lastly, everything came packaged individually in a really pretty white box with layers of foam to protect the products. Nothing was damaged, and everything came perfect. Overall, I'm so happy with my experience with Colourpop and I can't wait to order from them again. Stay tuned to find out what I bought in another post!

Probably the longest blog post ever but hopefully this was helpful! What are your experiences with Colourpop?

  2. Glad everything went smoothly! I'd love some ColourPop but living in the UK it would be ridiculously expensive trying to get a mail service to ship it etc! Looking forward to the review :)

    1. Yes I have. My order was under $100 CND and I had to pay roughly $27 CND in duty fees. The products are amazing, but I am definitely hesitant to order again.

    1. I did :/
I had placed an order 6 Jan 16. They shipped out 11 Jan and delivered around the 21st or 22nd. With shipping ($13 usd), the order was $70.07 USD. The duties applied were $14 CAD. The quality of the products are so so nice, but oh man, did the extra charges to get them kind of suck. I'll be waiting until the dollar recovers to purchase again

    3. Ah, now I'm conflicted about placing an order. Probably won't because the extra costs aren't worth it. Thanks for your review!

    4. I've ordered from them a few more times since writing this review and kept my order under $100 CAD each time, and I've never been charged duties!

    5. Does the $100 rule include shipping?

    6. I'm not sure if it's a "rule" but including shipping!!

    7. Duties are applied if your orders are over $20 CAD. $100 is very far off. Not sure why you weren't charged. Perhaps it wasn't stated on the box.

  9. Thank you for this post!! I just ordered from Colourpop and was worried about duties, but now that I know I spent under $100 I feel more assured! :) Can't wait to try them out!~

  10. I made an order in the end of February, just got them today only to find out I have to pay $20 for duties and my total was about $70 CAD! Does anyone know how they assess what to charge duties on? For the amount of products I got, I was definitely not expecting to spend a total of $100!

  11. Thank you very much for your review, it was very helpful! I made an order March 7th, they shipped it March 14th, and I just received it today, March 21st. The order total was $102.77 CAD, and I did not get charged duties. :)

    2. Which province do you live at? I used google converter to convert my expenses before placing my order ... But when PayPal converted it was slightly more than expected and it ended up to be $101cad... I just took the gamble for duties and placed an order anyway... But after hearing all these people getting charged for duties only when they are over $100 is making me nervous:/ especially when I was like one dollar off being under $100

I too had the $5 off for subscribing, placed a $57 USD order, had the $5 off code used and they had a deal, free international shipping on orders $50usd and up! I'm excited. So that's like, practically a free product there! Shipping flat rate internationally was $4.99 up to $50 orders. A promo today and boy did I take advantage! I can't wait to receive my order!

  29. Hey ladies,
I placed an order with Colourpop about 3-4 weeks ago and received my order last week. It took that long because I ordered right when they released a new collection. They sent me an email a couple days later that my order would be a little delayed, which was completely fine. I'm from Ontario (if that's relevant) and I had no duties applied. I spent $66 for 11 items (6 liquid lipsticks, 1 eyeshadow palette box, 1 single shadow, and 3 free highlighters. I'm in love with everything! Everything went smoothly. The only thing I was upset about was that Canada post just left my box on my porch without a word. I guess that's just their policy but other than that everything was fine!

    2. Normally you would pay to the Canada Post delivery person, either by cash or credit card. I just placed 2 orders, both at US$50. I tracked one of them, it seems to be held at customs. Kind of nervous right now :(

  31. I really want to buy from colour pop for my birthday (next Tuesday) but I'm scared about the duties. I live in Quebec so does the "less than 100$" rule is still on?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I don't know about Quebec but the "less than $100 rule" you're talking about is not a rule. It's an assumption this author made that was not true for a lot of people.

  32. Thanks so much, that's good to know. I donated a lot of new makeup to a woman's shelater this year (enough for 24 women to do a complete face) and got zapped with duties (over $120) from the US and the UK, and my orders were under $100. I even broke them up so I wouldn't get charged, but I would have been better off to do one massive order because the bulk of the charge was a processing fee. I thinknow what happened is I got most items on sale but they declared the regular value on the custom papers. Just something to keep in mind.

  34. I've done numerous orders with Colourpop over the last couple of years, always about $50US. Have never been charged duties until this order. $50US for the product and then an additional $18 for the customs fee, of which $8 is tax and the other &10 shipping and handling. Still, for the amount of product I got, and no shipping fee, it still worked out okay.

    ReplyDelete
  35. My experience was not as 'easy' particularly regarding duties. I bought ~$80US worth of cosmetics, but still payed ~$20CAN for the import. The little boxes are cute, but very hard to open. The box with 6 shadows was impossible to open, so I used a letter opener to loosen each shade out of its box. Now, just to check the quality of the shadows...

  36. This didn't work for me... I had an order of $50 (so free shipping) and 22 fucking dollarsof duties. I am beyond pissed and I want to cry. I've had things shipped from all over the world and I never had to pay for duties before.

    1. Agreed. The cost of customs was really unexpected :(

  37. This author's experience doesn't apply to most people. I had a $50 order and had to pay $20 in customs which is infuriating. Because of the unexpected costs, the Colorpop experience left me feeling like I was mislead and cheated.

  38. I assumed the exact same thing. I've made 2 orders. First one was last year, something like $80. Got charged no duty. This year $160 CAN, got charged 13% of that which was $30.

    1. Forgot to mention $10 of that $30 was a handling fee.

  39. this makes me super nervous placing my order. i guess the duties and everything like that are changing. I live in Alberta and i will place my order tonight (hopefully) and i will ensure it is less than $20 cause i really really DO NOT want to pay duties...or even the slightest possibility of paying duties! I will put a review up on my yt channel. so if anyone wants to be updated...let me know!
